Treason & Treats

An Open Day

This October Open Day we will celebrate our most infamous employee.

Explore Guy Fawkes’ tenure as a servant at West Horsley Place with talks, treats from the period — and a special Halloween twist.

Things to see & do
  • Explore the Manor House on a free flow route with expert stewards available to tell you the history of the site.

  • Jane's Historical Kitchen will be cooking up a Stuart storm.

  • Meet Guy Fawkes himself as he wanders through the rooms.

  • Talk by historian Sebastian Phillips on the background of the Gunpowder Plot (1pm & 4pm).
We all know that Guy Fawkes tried to blow up King James I. What's less well known is that James' court was riddled with scandal, rumours of poisoning, and a level of immorality which would have horrified Elizabeth I. This talk is based around current research into the more sordid side of the Jacobean court - and a broader look at the background to the Gunpowder Plot.

  • Halloween fancy dress encouraged! Treats will be dispensed at the manor house for the best costumes!

  • Get crafty helping us a build a Guy to be burnt at the end of the day.

  • Atmospheric bonfire. This Open Day will run later in the day to enjoy a fire in the darkness.
