Saxon Colours: Natural Dyeing

A Saxon Saga Workshop

Discover the colourful world of Saxon textiles as you use the power of plants and traditional dyeing techniques to transform your own T-shirt with striking indigo patterns.

Discover how the Saxons created colour from the natural world in this hands-on workshop with Osthryth Sews. Learn about the history of natural dyeing, the plants and materials traditionally used to create colour, and the fascinating processes behind some of the most popular dyes of the Saxon period.

You’ll then put the techniques into practice, preparing and binding your own T-shirt before immersing it in an indigo dye bath. Watch the magic happen as the fabric emerges and turns blue before your eyes, revealing your own unique pattern to take home and wear.

Osthryth Sews

Osthryth Sews brings the crafts of the past to life through living history and hands-on workshops. Specialising in historic textiles and natural dyeing, they share the traditional skills and techniques used to create colour and clothing in the Saxon period.
