We were absolutely delighted to organise a fantastic Tudor pastry competition for The Raleigh school this spring, as part of the Hampton Court Palace Tudor Festival.
Our friends from Jane's Historic Kitchen brought history to life, visiting each class dressed as Tudor cooks to tell the children how King Henry VIII gifted West Horsley Place to his cousin Henry Courtenay in 1533. Every child then created their own salt dough pastry pie lid fit for the King himself!
King Henry arrived at school to judge the children's entries and chose winners from every class. Reception and Key Stage 1 winners spent the morning at West Horsley Place, where they took part in a tour of the 15th century manor house set in 400 acres of estate. The children also joined in with butter churning and bread making in the Tudor Stone Kitchen.
The Key Stage 2 winners will be visiting Hampton Court Palace on 25th June where they will be experiencing the sights and sounds of King Henry VIII and his court on tour in the gardens including demonstration tents, performances and historical characters.
At West Horsley Place Trust, we are passionate about making history accessible and exciting for young minds - what better way than hands-on learning in the very place where it all happened!
