2017 has been a year of great activity and achievement at West Horsley Place. Most importantly emergency works started to the house and garden walls, and we were able to welcome the public to explore and enjoy the house and gardens over the Heritage Open Days weekend and West Horsley Place Food Festival. We took our first steps towards being at the heart of our local community by hosting the West Horsley Village Fete in September. Alongside all this we were granted planning permission by Guildford Borough Council for our proposals of change of use to enable our vision for the future.
These public events would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers. To thank them for their support, time and hard work we held a festive party at the house. This was a great opportunity to deck the halls, light the fires and bring the house to life. Around 80 guests attended including our trustees, support and commercial partners, design and construction team and estate tenants. Looking around the Stone Hall it was striking that every person in the room had contributed in some way to our effort to restore this beautiful house and estate and enable the public to have access it to it.
Deliciously catered by our events partner rhubarb, the afternoon was full of mulled wine, mince pies and cheer. Guests had a surprise in store in the shape of magnificent Scottish Piper Jock McCullough, who kindly offered his services free of charge. On departure everyone was given a sprig of mistletoe, kindly harvested from our gardens and tied with ribbons by one of our tenants. A wonderful time was had by all!
